The recent reunion of the Indonesian girl group Princess, alongside their founder and producer Kevin Aprilio, has sparked significant public interest and a wave of nostalgia among fans of the early 2010s pop scene. However, the celebratory atmosphere has been tempered by the notable absence of Elma Agustin, one of the group’s most prominent original members. As images and videos of the remaining members congregating with Kevin Aprilio circulated across social media platforms, netizens quickly began to question why Elma was not part of the gathering. The situation escalated when Elma broke her silence via a social media video, revealing that she had not been invited to the reunion and expressing deep disappointment regarding the manner in which the situation was handled by her former colleagues and management.
The Context of the Princess Reunion
The vocal group Princess, which was a staple of the Indonesian music industry during the "boyband and girlband" era, recently staged a small-scale reunion that caught the attention of the national entertainment media. Kevin Aprilio, the musician and founder of the talent management agency Aprilio Kingdom, shared moments of the gathering, which featured several former members. For many fans, Princess represented a specific era of Indonesian pop culture influenced by the global Hallyu wave, characterized by synchronized choreography and catchy, melodic pop tunes.
The group, which originally debuted in 2011, has undergone various lineup changes over the years, but Elma Agustin remained a central figure throughout much of its active period. Her absence from the 2024 reunion was immediately conspicuous, leading to a flurry of speculation ranging from personal conflicts to professional scheduling issues. As the digital discourse intensified, the need for a direct response became apparent, prompting Elma to provide her side of the story.
Elma Agustin’s Public Response and Clarification
Responding to the mounting curiosity of her followers on TikTok and Instagram, Elma Agustin released a video statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reunion. In the video, she confirmed the rumors that she was not part of the event because she had never received an official or informal invitation to attend. According to Elma, she was informed that she would not be included in the reunion, but the notification lacked a clear explanation or justification for the decision.
Elma emphasized that her primary grievance was not necessarily the exclusion itself, but rather the breakdown in communication. She noted that despite having a long history with the group and maintaining access to mutual communication channels, the outreach was handled in a manner she described as impersonal. "I am more disappointed because of the communication," Elma stated in her video. "They have my phone number, we are all in a WhatsApp group together, but the way it was communicated made it feel as though we were strangers who didn’t know each other."
This statement highlights a significant rift in the professional and personal relationships that once bound the group together. Elma’s reflection on her journey with Princess—recalling the struggles and hard work from the group’s inception—underscored the emotional weight of being sidelined during a milestone moment for the collective’s legacy.
Historical Background: The Rise and Fall of Princess
To understand the weight of Elma’s exclusion, it is necessary to look back at the history of Princess and its impact on the Indonesian music landscape. Founded by Kevin Aprilio in 2011 under the Aprilio Kingdom label, Princess was designed to be a premium girl group that combined vocal talent with a sophisticated aesthetic. The original lineup consisted of Elma Agustin, Ana Octarina, Rachel Octavia, Danu Devano, and Alika Islamadina.
The group’s debut single, "Jangan Pergi," was a commercial success, establishing them as serious contenders in a market then dominated by groups like Cherrybelle and 7icons. Unlike some of their contemporaries who leaned into a more "bubblegum pop" image, Princess projected a more mature and elegant persona, which was reflected in their fashion choices and the musical compositions provided by Kevin Aprilio.
Over the next three years, the group experienced several transitions. Alika Islamadina departed in 2012 to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Patricia Devina. Despite these changes, Princess maintained a loyal fanbase. However, the waning popularity of the girl group trend in Indonesia eventually led to the group’s official disbandment in June 2014. At the time of their dissolution, Kevin Aprilio cited the members’ desire to pursue individual interests and the changing dynamics of the music industry as the primary reasons for the split.
The Complex Dynamic Between Elma Agustin and Kevin Aprilio
A critical layer to the current controversy is the historical relationship between Elma Agustin and Kevin Aprilio. Beyond their professional ties as artist and producer, the two were involved in a well-documented long-term romantic relationship during the height of Princess’s fame. Their relationship was a frequent topic of discussion in celebrity news outlets, particularly regarding their differing religious backgrounds, which ultimately contributed to their separation.
While both parties had moved on to other personal and professional ventures following the group’s disbandment, the recent reunion brought their past dynamic back into the spotlight. Some industry observers suggest that the personal history between the founder and the former lead member may have played a role in the decision-making process regarding the reunion’s guest list. However, in the absence of an official statement from Kevin Aprilio or the other participating members, these remains speculative.
Analysis of the "Nostalgia Economy" in Indonesia
The Princess reunion is part of a larger trend in the Indonesian entertainment industry known as the "nostalgia economy." In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in groups and artists from the 2010s. This trend is driven by a demographic of fans who are now in their late 20s and early 30s, looking back at their formative years with fondness.
Reunions of this nature are often highly lucrative and beneficial for brand building. They generate significant social media engagement, drive streams for old catalogs, and can lead to new endorsement deals or performance opportunities. However, the success of such reunions often hinges on the "completeness" of the group. When a key member like Elma Agustin is missing, it can create a narrative of internal strife that distracts from the nostalgic appeal.
From a public relations perspective, the handling of Elma’s exclusion serves as a case study in the importance of internal communication within the entertainment industry. In an era where artists have direct lines of communication to their fans via social media, any perceived slight or lack of transparency can quickly become a public controversy.
Public and Netizen Reactions
The reaction from the public has been largely sympathetic toward Elma Agustin. On various social media platforms, fans expressed their disappointment, noting that Princess felt incomplete without her presence. Many pointed out that Elma was one of the most consistent members of the group and contributed significantly to their vocal identity.
Netizens have also been critical of the "cold" communication style described by Elma. Comments on her TikTok video and related news posts suggest a public preference for professional closure and mutual respect, especially among individuals who worked closely together for years. Some fans have called for a "full" reunion that includes all original members, though the current tension makes such an event seem unlikely in the near future.
Implications for Future Collaborations
The fallout from this incident may have lasting implications for any future projects involving the Princess brand or the Aprilio Kingdom legacy. For Kevin Aprilio, who remains an influential figure in the music scene, the controversy highlights the challenges of managing legacy acts where personal and professional lines are blurred.
For the other members of Princess who participated in the reunion—Ana Octarina, Siti Gayatri, and others—the situation places them in a difficult position between loyalty to their producer and their former teammate. The "WhatsApp group" mentioned by Elma suggests that while digital connections remain, the emotional and professional bonds have frayed significantly.
Chronology of Events
To provide a clear overview of the situation, the following timeline outlines the key events leading to the current discourse:

Conclusion
The controversy surrounding Elma Agustin and the Princess reunion serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in the music industry, where professional partnerships are often deeply intertwined with personal histories. While the reunion was intended to be a celebratory nod to the past, it has instead exposed unresolved tensions and a lack of communicative cohesion.
As the Indonesian music industry continues to embrace nostalgia, the story of Princess and Elma Agustin may serve as a cautionary tale for other groups looking to revive their brands. Transparency, respect for past contributions, and clear communication remain essential components of maintaining a positive legacy. Whether or not there will be a reconciliation between Elma and her former colleagues remains to be seen, but for now, the "reunion" of Princess remains an incomplete chapter in the history of Indonesian pop music.
