VinFast Launches Three Electric Motorcycles in Indonesia with Innovative Battery Subscription Model

by Basiran

JAKARTA – Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast officially entered the Indonesian motorcycle market on Saturday, July 18, 2026, with the unveiling of three new electric motorcycle models: the VinFast Evo, VinFast Feliz II, and VinFast Viper. The launch event, held at Tribeca Park, Central Park, West Jakarta, introduced a unique ownership strategy that combines the purchase of the motorcycle with an optional battery subscription service, aiming to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in Indonesia.

The introduction of these models signifies VinFast’s strategic ambition to tap into Indonesia’s burgeoning two-wheeler market, which is a critical component of the nation’s broader electric vehicle (EV) adoption goals. Yordan Satriadi, CEO of VinFast Indonesia E-Motorcycle, highlighted the company’s alignment with government initiatives, particularly the target to increase the electric motorcycle population to 13 million units by 2030.

“We observe that Indonesian society is becoming increasingly astute in managing their expenses. Simultaneously, the government has set ambitious targets for the development of electric vehicles. This presents an excellent opportunity for VinFast,” Satriadi stated during the launch. He emphasized that the company’s approach caters to a market segment that values both affordability and sustainable transportation solutions.

Pricing and Ownership Flexibility

VinFast has strategically priced its new electric motorcycles to appeal to a broad consumer base. The VinFast Evo is offered at Rp 17.5 million (on-the-road, OTR, Jakarta) with the battery subscription scheme. The VinFast Feliz II is priced at Rp 18.5 million, and the premium VinFast Viper is marketed at Rp 22 million OTR Jakarta, both also incorporating the battery subscription model.

The battery subscription model is a cornerstone of VinFast’s strategy in Indonesia. This flexible approach allows consumers to purchase the electric motorcycle without the upfront cost of the battery, which is leased separately. This significantly lowers the initial purchase price, making electric motorcycles more accessible.

“We are not only offering an affordable initial price but also providing flexibility so that customers can choose the ownership scheme that best suits their mobility needs,” Satriadi elaborated. This model aims to alleviate concerns about battery degradation and replacement costs, which are often significant barriers to EV adoption.

Comprehensive Warranty and Launch Promotions

Beyond competitive pricing and flexible ownership options, VinFast is backing its Indonesian launch with a robust warranty package and attractive promotional offers. All VinFast electric motorcycles sold in Indonesia come with a vehicle warranty of up to six years or 72,000 kilometers, whichever comes first. This extensive coverage aims to build consumer confidence and reassure buyers about the longevity and reliability of their electric bikes.

To further incentivize early adoption and alleviate range anxiety, VinFast is offering a special launch promotion: customers will receive one year of free battery swapping at VinFast’s network of battery swapping stations. This service is capped at a maximum of 20 swaps per month for each motorcycle, ensuring users can easily exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one without significant waiting times.

Satriadi explained the rationale behind this initiative: "We expect this service to reduce the cost of ownership while providing users with peace of mind for their daily use of electric vehicles." This move directly addresses a common concern for EV users – the availability and convenience of recharging or replacing batteries.

Pre-Launch Buzz and Strategic Vision

The anticipation for VinFast’s entry into the Indonesian market was palpable even before the official launch. Pre-orders were initiated with a deposit of Rp 100,000, granting interested consumers the opportunity to participate in a full-day test ride program. This strategy not only generated early sales leads but also allowed potential customers to experience the performance and features of VinFast’s electric motorcycles firsthand.

Vo Thi Cam Tu, Managing Director of VinFast E-Motorcycle Overseas Market, reiterated Indonesia’s importance as a strategic hub for VinFast’s expansion in Southeast Asia. "The high level of public enthusiasm since the opening of the early booking program strengthens our confidence in the prospects of electric vehicles in Indonesia," she remarked.

Cam Tu outlined VinFast’s strategic blueprint for the Indonesian market, which is built upon three core pillars:

  1. Consumer-Centric Product Development: Offering products that precisely meet the needs and preferences of Indonesian consumers. This includes considerations for local riding conditions, utility, and aesthetics.
  2. Holistic Ownership Experience: Providing a comprehensive ownership journey through excellent after-sales service and a well-established battery swapping network. This aims to ensure a seamless and hassle-free experience for EV users.
  3. Strengthened Sales and Service Support: Reinforcing sales infrastructure and customer service channels to provide readily available assistance and support.

"We believe Indonesia is ready for greener and smarter mobility. Our long-term commitment is realized through our products, services, and the battery swapping ecosystem that we are continuously developing," Cam Tu added. This commitment suggests a long-term investment in the Indonesian EV landscape, beyond just product launches.

Supporting Data and Market Context

The Indonesian motorcycle market is one of the largest globally, with millions of units sold annually. This presents a massive opportunity for electric motorcycle manufacturers. The government’s push towards electrification is driven by several factors:

  • Environmental Concerns: Indonesia faces significant air pollution challenges, particularly in urban centers like Jakarta, largely attributed to emissions from conventional vehicles. Shifting to electric motorcycles is seen as a crucial step in mitigating this.
  • Energy Independence: Reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels is a national priority. Promoting EVs helps diversify energy sources and reduce the trade deficit.
  • Economic Growth: The EV sector is projected to be a significant driver of economic growth, creating new industries, jobs, and technological advancements.

According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), the total motorcycle sales in Indonesia typically hover around 5-6 million units per year. While electric motorcycle sales are currently a fraction of this, they are on an upward trajectory. The government’s target of 13 million electric motorcycles by 2030 indicates an ambitious but achievable goal, requiring substantial market penetration and consumer acceptance.

The introduction of battery subscription models by companies like VinFast is a critical innovation in this context. Traditional battery replacement costs can be a deterrent. By leasing batteries, consumers can avoid this large capital expenditure and potentially benefit from battery upgrades as technology advances. This model is already gaining traction in other markets and is seen as a key enabler for mass EV adoption.

Broader Implications and Analysis

VinFast’s entry into Indonesia with a distinct business model is likely to have several implications for the local EV market:

  • Increased Competition: The arrival of a new, well-funded player like VinFast is expected to intensify competition among existing and emerging EV manufacturers. This could lead to further innovation, improved product offerings, and more competitive pricing for consumers.
  • Acceleration of Battery Swapping Infrastructure: VinFast’s emphasis on a battery swapping network suggests a commitment to building out this critical infrastructure. As more players adopt similar models or collaborate, the availability and convenience of battery swapping stations will improve, further encouraging EV adoption.
  • Consumer Education and Awareness: The launch campaign and promotional activities will play a vital role in educating the Indonesian public about the benefits of electric motorcycles, addressing common misconceptions, and building trust in the technology.
  • Impact on Traditional Motorcycle Manufacturers: The increasing presence of EV manufacturers like VinFast could put pressure on established gasoline-powered motorcycle makers to accelerate their own transition to electric models.

The success of VinFast’s battery subscription model will hinge on several factors, including the reliability and lifespan of their batteries, the density and convenience of their swapping network, and the overall cost-effectiveness compared to traditional motorcycle ownership. Furthermore, regulatory support and consumer perception will be crucial determinants of long-term success.

The company’s stated commitment to a long-term presence in Indonesia, coupled with a strategic approach that addresses key consumer concerns like upfront cost and battery management, positions VinFast as a significant contender in the Indonesian electric motorcycle landscape. As the nation strides towards a greener transportation future, VinFast’s innovative strategy could prove instrumental in accelerating this transition. The coming years will reveal the full impact of this ambitious market entry on Indonesia’s journey towards sustainable mobility.
