REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – VinFast, the Vietnamese automotive manufacturer, has confirmed its commitment to localizing the production of electric motorcycles in Indonesia, with assembly operations set to commence in Subang, West Java, in 2027. This strategic move marks a significant step for the company as it aims to deepen its presence in the rapidly growing Indonesian electric vehicle market.
Currently, all VinFast electric motorcycle units sold within Indonesia are imported as Completely Built-Up (CBU) units. However, according to Yordan Satriadi, Chief Executive Officer of VinFast Indonesia E-Motocycle, the company is actively preparing its facility in Subang to handle Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) assembly. "For the time being, this year, everything is still CBU. But later, the CKD will be done in Subang. The plan is to start next year, which is 2027," Yordan stated during an interview following the launch of VinFast electric motorcycles in West Jakarta on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
This transition to local assembly is a crucial element of VinFast’s long-term strategy for the Indonesian market, aligning with the Indonesian government’s push to encourage local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports for electric vehicles. The CKD approach typically involves importing components and assembling them locally, which can lead to cost efficiencies, job creation, and the potential for further localization of parts sourcing in the future.
VinFast has officially entered the Indonesian electric motorcycle market by introducing three distinct models: the VinFast Evo, the VinFast Feliz II, and the VinFast Viper. These models cater to different consumer preferences and needs within the urban mobility landscape. The VinFast Evo is priced at Rp 17.5 million on the road (OTR) in Jakarta, the Feliz II is available for Rp 18.5 million OTR Jakarta, and the Viper is priced at Rp 22 million OTR Jakarta. Notably, these prices are offered with a battery subscription scheme, a model that aims to reduce the upfront cost of electric vehicles for consumers and address potential range anxiety by providing access to battery swapping services.
The battery subscription model is a growing trend in the electric vehicle sector, particularly for two-wheelers. By separating the cost of the battery from the vehicle itself, manufacturers can make electric motorcycles more affordable and accessible. This approach also shifts the responsibility of battery maintenance and eventual replacement to the manufacturer or a dedicated service provider, offering peace of mind to users.
Beyond direct consumer sales, VinFast is actively exploring partnership opportunities with various business entities. This includes catering to the operational vehicle needs of companies and supporting app-based ride-hailing services. "We are open to everyone. So, everything can be absorbed. We are open; anyone who wants to own our vehicles for their company fleet or for ride-hailing, we can cooperate," Yordan emphasized. This B2B (Business-to-Business) strategy is vital for accelerating EV adoption, as corporate fleets and ride-hailing services represent a significant segment of motorcycle usage in Indonesia. Partnering with these sectors can create a substantial customer base and drive demand for electric motorcycles.
To support its product offerings and enhance the user experience, VinFast is concurrently expanding its electric vehicle ecosystem through the development of a robust battery swapping network. In collaboration with V-Green, VinFast has already established over 2,000 battery swapping stations strategically located across the Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) area and several major cities on the island of Java. This extensive network is designed to provide convenience and efficiency for VinFast motorcycle owners, allowing them to quickly exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one, thereby minimizing downtime and eliminating the need for lengthy charging periods.
Market Potential and Strategic Outlook
The Indonesian motorcycle market is one of the largest in the world, with annual sales exceeding six million units. This sheer volume presents a highly promising prospect for the development of VinFast’s business in the electric two-wheeler segment. The company’s assessment of this vast market potential underpins its ambitious investment and localization plans.
"Indonesia’s market is huge. Annually, it’s more than six million units. This is something very interesting for the two-wheel business in Indonesia," Yordan remarked. This statistic highlights the significant opportunity for electric motorcycles to capture market share from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. As consumer awareness and government incentives for EVs continue to grow, the transition to electric mobility is expected to accelerate.
VinFast’s strategic approach, which includes local production, the expansion of its battery swapping infrastructure, and the development of a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem, is geared towards strengthening its penetration in the Indonesian electric motorcycle market. By addressing key concerns such as cost, convenience, and charging infrastructure, VinFast aims to position itself as a leading player in this burgeoning sector.
Background and Context: The Global Shift to Electric Mobility
The Indonesian government has set ambitious targets for electric vehicle adoption as part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering a greener economy. These targets are supported by various policies and incentives aimed at encouraging both the production and consumption of EVs. The establishment of VinFast’s local assembly plant aligns perfectly with these national objectives, signaling a tangible commitment from a major international player to contribute to Indonesia’s electric mobility transition.
The global automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation, with a clear shift towards electrification. Major automakers worldwide are investing heavily in EV research, development, and manufacturing. Indonesia, with its large population and significant demand for two-wheelers, is a critical market in this global transition.
The presence of established players like VinFast, alongside emerging domestic EV startups and existing motorcycle manufacturers exploring electric options, indicates a competitive yet collaborative environment driving innovation and accessibility in the Indonesian EV market. The success of these initiatives will be crucial in determining the pace at which Indonesia can achieve its clean transportation goals.
Broader Implications and Future Outlook
The decision by VinFast to establish local production in Indonesia is likely to have several positive implications. Firstly, it will contribute to job creation in the manufacturing sector, particularly in the Subang region. Secondly, it can foster the development of local supply chains for EV components, potentially benefiting Indonesian businesses and enhancing technological transfer. Thirdly, increased competition from manufacturers like VinFast can lead to greater product variety and more competitive pricing for consumers, further accelerating EV adoption.
The success of VinFast’s battery swapping network will be a critical factor in its market acceptance. The convenience and speed of battery exchange are key differentiators for electric motorcycles, especially in a market where rapid mobility is often a priority. A well-developed and accessible network can alleviate consumer concerns about range and charging times, making electric motorcycles a more attractive alternative to their gasoline-powered counterparts.
Looking ahead, VinFast’s commitment to local production and its comprehensive ecosystem development strategy position it as a serious contender in the Indonesian electric motorcycle market. The company’s ability to adapt to local market demands, offer competitive pricing, and build trust through reliable products and services will be paramount to its long-term success. As Indonesia continues its journey towards a more sustainable transportation future, the contributions of manufacturers like VinFast will play a pivotal role in shaping that landscape. The coming years will be a crucial period for VinFast to solidify its presence and demonstrate its long-term vision for electric mobility in the archipelago.
